Q. How long will it take?

This depends whether the kitchen renovation is a cosmetic refurbishment or an entire rebuild with structural changes.

:: Cosmetic Revamp

  • A cosmetic refit can be done within just a few days if the layout of the ktichen is functional, the core kitchen appliances are in good order and the structure of the cabinetry is sound.
  • This will usually involve replacing doors and draw fascias and overlaying composite stone surfaces over the existing benchtops.
  • Deciding on which colours and finishes you want can take some people weeks if not months.
  • Organise a measure and quote, and ensure your quote details total costs for ALL elements.
  • Ordering the replacement cupboards and stone surfaces can take a few weeks depending on stock availability and how customized pieces need to be.
  • You will usually need to pay a deposit when placing your order. This can be between 10-50% and depends on the total job value and components (eg. Mostly stone or is there cabinetry, appliances, etc).
  • Good planning and clear design ideas beforehand will help a rapid implementation and fast renovation result.
  • Actual implementation will usually only be 1-2 days.
  • A quick cosmetic revamp can cost as little as $3,000 for a small gallie style kitchen with minimal bench space in 7mm synthetic stone composite overlay.
  • Generally for a composite stone benchtop overlay on a medium sized kitchen plus cupboard and drawer fascias might be around $7,000 depending on materials selected.
  • Note: Prices are estimates only and strictly subject to site measurement and custom quote for each individual project.

:: Entire Rebuild

  • An entire kitchen redesign and rebuild can be a long process.
  • Structural changes to a building may need local council approval and / or body corporate, as well as input from an architect or draftsperson.  This might include things such as removing, relocating or creating walls, windows and door ways.
  • Selection and ordering of new kitchen appliances must be done before a design is finalised as the measurements of these appliance is key to have confirmed before ordering any custom made cabinetry.
  • Similarly, floor and wall tiling and splash-back selection, ordering and supply all need to be considered in the project timeframe.
  • Once a kitchen design has been agreed and signed off, and materials ordered, make a 'alternative kitchen plan' to put into action once your kitchen is no longer accessible. Consider relocating the fridge, having a make shift pantry and cutlery and kitchwares supply and a place to prepare food and wash dishes. Better still, if you can actually move out for the period, especially if you have a young family, as the kitchen is usually such an essential part of any family home.
  • Allow 1 - 2 days to demolish and remove an existing medium sized kitchen.
  • Any structural changes required will need to be factored in to your schedule so liaise with your builder to confirm completion dates.
  • Cabinetry can usually be fitted within 2 days on medium sized kitchens.
  • Allow another 2-3 days min to install kitchen appliances including connections for electrical elements, venting, and plumbing.
  • Benchtops will take 2-3 days depending on the material used and the area to be covered, as well as the 'edge' finishes required. Some are more labor and material intensive (and so more expensive) than others.
  • Consider time required for splash-backs and tiling on walls and floors.
  • Finishing details such as tap fittings, sinks, door hardware, light fittings, power point locations and finishes, etc. should also be budgeted for and added to the time frame and budget.
  • Ultimately a complete kitchen redesign and overall can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $80,000+, depending on the specifications requested.

Q. How much will it cost?

  • The final cost will ultimately depend on the scope of the work to be completed, the types, and quantities of materials selected and the urgency of the project.
  • Have a clear picture in mind of the end design or 'look' that you are after, and stick to this concept. Distractions and whimsical fancies can put a project off schedule and well over budget.
  • To minimize costs, try to avoid peak seasons - particularly the Christmas Holiday and New Year seasons.
  • Shop around for designer appliances and materials that cost less, or get advice from interior designers, kitchen designers and those in the trade to find suitable substitues to high-end, highly-priced materials.
  • Consider composite stone benchtops instead of genuine granite or marble, which while beautiful, are not as durable and stain more easily than the man-made versions of composite stone, such as Caesar Stone, Roxx, Stonex, etc.
  • Also remember to factor in the fact that marble and granite benchtops will also need repollishing at regular intervals and this maintenance should be included in budgets long term, whereas synthetic stone composites will not.
  • Consider the lifespan of the product or material to be used. For example, laminate benchtop surfaces might suffice for a quick repair or budget rental, but will it add value to property the same as a composite granite benchtop?  Laminate will often need repairing or replacing quickly, especially in wet areas, and can quickly look scrapy and cheap.

Q. Do I need to organise my own Plumbers and Electricians?
